John Lewis Partnership working with PRP to help spread the word on rainforest destruction

As part of its wider commitment to tackling climate change the John Lewis Partnership supports the PRP call for emergency action to help combat climate change by addressing rainforest destruction. The Partnership shares the aims of the PRP and encourages others to join in the call for urgent action.  It sees the PRP campaign as a vital part of the solution to climate change and is committed to playing its part in raising the campaign’s profile.

The Chairman of the Partnership, Charlie Mayfield, has been filmed for our corporate leaders film articulating his support for urgent action to address rainforest destruction.   The Partnership will be promoting the PRP message amongst its 69,000 employees (known as Partners) and encouraging them to sign-up and show their individual support.  It will also feature the campaign on its company website.  

The Partnership is active in a number of areas where its products are related to forestry:

  • The John Lewis Timber Programme sets out the company’s commitment to never source from areas where it believes forest management is poor, and to help suppliers work towards forestry certification in order to raise forestry standards, increase the availability of certified timber and phase out illegal and unsustainable sources.
  • Both John Lewis and Waitrose sell a range of paper-based products which are made from recycled materials or come from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sources.  
  • Waitrose supports the Greenpeace led moratorium to combat deforestation in the Amazon for the cultivation and sourcing of soya.
  • Waitrose is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil which is committed to promoting the growth and use of sustainable palm oil. It has communicated a palm oil policy to its suppliers and is committed to working with them to help them source palm oil from independently certified and sustainable plantations.
